Paul, Weiss Partner, Corporate
Harvard Law School, 1989

“Originally I was drawn to Paul, Weiss because of its very strong practice in China, and because of the leader of the group at the time — Jerome Cohen, an impressive, enthusiastic and pre-eminent lawyer in his field. To me, what really set him apart was that this world-renowned lawyer really cared about fostering my career. He had a broad perspective on what people could contribute to the firm and what the firm could contribute to the world. To him, it wasn’t just ‘What can you do for Paul, Weiss?’ It was ‘What can Paul, Weiss do for you?’

He hired me as a paralegal back in 1985, and that started me on my merry way . It’s now more than 20 years later, and I am a partner at this firm. He was a great mentor; he really cultivated my talents. And I think that the firm as a whole shares that philosophy: It’s made up of people who care about you as an individual and not simply whether or not you are producing for the firm.”

Mentoring

We understand the value of substantive mentoring for the successful development of our associates. As a result Paul, Weiss has established formal mentoring programs and has built a tight-knit culture that affords meaningful interaction between partners, counsel and associates.

  • Associate Mentors: Each new associate is assigned an associate mentor who helps them navigate their first year at the firm. Through a combination of informal get togethers and other firm events, new associates are provided every opportunity to interact with their associate mentors.
  • Diversity Mentoring Program: Starting in their second year at the firm, lawyers of color can choose to be paired with a partner within their practice area who helps guide their career and with whom the associate can develop a meaningful professional relationship.
  • Women’s Group Mentoring Program: Every woman attorney is assigned to a women’s mentoring group when they enter the firm; each group is a cross-section of women lawyers — associates, counsel and partners — who provide mutual support and promote networking.
  • Women’s Sponsors Program: High-performing senior women associates are asked to join the sponsors program in their sixth year, and are matched with a partner who will help guide their career development as they head toward partnership consideration.
